Library

One of the brightest jewels in our school building is our school library.  With a collection of over 700 volumes, the library holdings support the school’s curricula in General and Judaic Studies.  Students learn basic library usage as a vital component for project research and study.

The Desert Torah Academy Library serves both our elementary and middle school students.  The library has a special early education section especially designed for our Torah Tots students.

Library Rules and Policies

Checking out library materials:

Students grades K-8 will be allowed to check 1 book out each week. The book will need to be returned in the same condition as it was in during checkout. Student may renew their books for an additional week. Two renewals are permissible unless the book has been requested by another student.

Lost, Overdue, or Damaged items:

The student is responsible for returning the book on time. There will be a 10 cents per day late fee until the book is returned. If the books are damaged or missing, the student is responsible for the cost of the book.

Library Selection Policy:

Materials for the school library are selected by the school library media specialist with the approval of the principals. Selection is based on a careful study of reviews from reliable sources and, when possible, a personal inspection of the materials.

Criteria for selection:

-          The materials selected contribute directly or indirectly to the school curriculum

-          Reading and maturity levels are considered

-          Recreational and developmental needs of students are taken into account

-          Works of non-fiction are up-to-date, accurate, reliable, and objective

-          Works of fiction have positive qualities

-          Material which may be sensitive in nature or controversial is evaluated in the light of the overall contribution. Honesty of presentation, literary value, and a realistic manner of portraying life are considered in determining their right to a place in the collection.

-          The collection is constantly being evaluated. If material is out-dated or no longer meets the needs of the students it will be discarded

-          Materials may be challenged and will be evaluated by a committee of teachers and adminstrators selected by the principal.
